A disappointing morning at Mifuneyama Rakuen

Last month I spent a day in Saga prefecture as you may have seen on Twitter and Facebook. At first I wanted to make a single article on this day but I realized that I had too many photos to share , and that the length of the article wouldn't be decent. So here is the first part of my trip, at Mifuneyama garden and in the city of Takeo Onsen.

Mifuneyama Rakuen (御船山楽園) is a garden located in the middle of the rural Saga Prefecture in Takeo city.

I knew the garden for a long time but only knew that it was in next-door Saga last summer. I forgot about it until my fellow blogger mate Jordy told me he would be going too. I already knew that I would spend a day in Saga in April but I already had plans so I was hesitating if I should include Mifuneyama garden too. Finally it's Ellery's pictures which convinced me to go.
I still hesitated to go until the last moment because of the weather. Around a week before muy trip weather was all fine but it changed to a rainy day. The day before it changed again to a cloudy weather so I decided to go. Unfortunately I arrived in Takeo Onsen by a misty and rainy morning. The weather is not so reliable sometimes ...

I took the bus to the garden and arrived 5 minutes after it opened. There were only very few people but I went directly toward the azaleas field. And I was disappointed... There was already not many flowers anymore. Bushes were more green than pink. On their Facebook page, they were still uploading beautiful pictures with a lot of flowers the day before my visit and I was expecting to see this landscape. I had the impression to have been mistaken, especially because I had asked them by leaving a comment about the progress of flowering but I never got an answer.

Well, there were still some flowers, faded ones but there were some and it was better than another blogger who had  really nothing at all during her visit (but at least she paid a cheaper fee). I started to explore the other parts of the garden without much enthusiasm but up the hills was pretty nice with many flowers and a lovely view of the countryside around, unfortunately in the fog that day.
I was expecting so much better of the garden or maybe it was because of the bad weather that I didn't enjoyed it ? Or all my visits to famous gardens are cursed...

I had some time before my bus and I took the opportunity to come back to the station by foot while taking my time. I stopped at the Takeo Century Hotel garden but it was closed ... Then I did a stroll in the city and I can say it has no charm. It is even less pretty than Yufuin and I was even disappointed by famous onsen : behind the entrance arch there was a huge parking lot. Not very photogenic stuff so I went back to the station where I waited for the bus bound my next destination which was much more wonderful.

Mifuneyama garden is a place to go but it's better to call in advance about the flowers. You should avoid rainy days too : I found the place depressing and  expensive for what it was. If I go again next year it will be a sunny day and why not go there in the late afternoon to see the illuminations !
