About one year after its opening, I could finally visit the owl cafe of Fukuoka (フクロウのみせ).Very popular because it is the only place of this kind in whole Kyushu, it was very crowded, especially on weekends, where people have to be in front of the cafe at 10AM to make sure having a reservation for the day (they do not accept reservation in advance). We totally forgot about this cafe until this Sunday. We were near the shop and decided to go. Fortunately, we could enter quickly.
Owl cafe are like cat cafes (neko cafe, 猫カフェ) : we pay a fee to play freely with the animals for a limited time. But, because owls are very sensitive birds, rules are way more strict.
First, time in the cafe is limited to one hour. On this one hour, 10 minutes are spent listening staff about rules (while owls are taking a break). To protect their sensitive eyes, photography with flashes are not permitted and cafe is not open to outside. We also can't freely touch the birds, we have to wait for a staff member.
Everything is write down a sheet given to us as we enter the cafe. They are really strict and anyone who is breaking rules is asked to leave the place.
How it works ?
First, you have to came in front of the cafe at the time of your reservation. A staff will go out and call your name. Go directly on 2nd floor. Order a drink, clean your hands and listen to the rules provided by the staff.
Then, you can go to the first floor and start photographing owls. You also can carry them on hand, shoulder or even head !
Owl cafe has around 20 owls but, it is only permitted to "play" with 5 or 6 of them. The other ones are on a break and it is prohibited to touch them (photographies are accepted).
When the hour is finished, pay and leave.
The cafe is quite pretty, entirely decorated with stuff printed owls. It is very small and ot so comfy (we can't sit on the owl floor) but very clean, cleaner than cat cafes I went to.
I really liked touching the owls, seeing them from a near place and talk with the friendly staff, I thought it looked more like a zoo than a cafe. There is too much people, noise and we have to wait a lot! Within 50 minutes, we could have owls with us only 10 minutes. Unlike a cat cafe, it is not a place I would visit several times. One time is more than enough.
