Did you know that in Fukuoka, there is a worldwide known tower? Some coal winding tower is more known as Anti-Zombie Fortress and it is an internet favorite.
This 47.65m tower was achieved in 1943 and was the main part of the coal mine of Shime (1889 - 1964). It is one of the last 3 winding tower of the world.
I first noticed this tower in 2012 when a strange Japanese guy on Mixi (Japanese social network) wanted us to meet at night near the tower. Of course I ignored the message. I briefly forgot the winding tower until I saw it from the nearby Aeon shopping mall.
Its dilapidated shape, its special shape and location (you can see it from a fa place) made this place really scary. It gave me chicken skin and, to be honnest, I was terrified. Despite, curiosity won and I decided to go closer to have a look.
Access from hakata Station :
Ride the JR Fukuhoku Yutaka Line (to Nogata) and get off at Chôjabaru station (長者原駅) and change for the Kashii line (for Umi) and get off at Sue station (須恵駅). It takes 18 minutes by express train and 27 minutes with local train. It costs 280 JPY. Then you have a 17 minutes walk.
The way from Sue station is not really nice as you have to walk by a big road full of trucks and go under the highway. Then you can see the tower ! it is at the top of a little mountain just next to... a playground and a sports field ! It is very lively. Because of that I was not afraid anymore and could slowly look at the tower and walk around. of course i would not go at night, it must be so frightening because it is not lighted up. Neighbourhood people even say that there are ghosts at night.
